Belle Vue quite literally means ‘beautiful view’ - and for generations it’s been more than just a pub. It’s where locals, visitors, and families have gathered to share a pint, swap stories, and watch the tide roll in and out together.

The Belle Vue’s roots go back to the early 1700s. Smuggling tunnels once linked the tavern to cottages across the road, with the Pegwell gang (led by blacksmith ‘Big Jim’) running the show. One tale tells of a gardener who drowned on a late-night run hauling contraband from the bay, with the loot stashed in the tavern’s cellars!
Psst...can you spot the Potted Shrimp Factory across the street in this photo?!

Fast forward to today and The Belle Vue is still at the heart of Pegwell life. The smuggling days may be long gone, but the spirit of gathering, sharing and celebrating remains the same. Whether it’s a family lunch, a pint with friends, or live music on the terrace, it’s a place for good food, good company and plenty of seaside charm.
Those old stories still linger in our beams and bricks though... if only walls could talk!
